Scheduled races/ runs....and training.....

April 24, 2015-

Today we ran a nice 5 mile run. We started a little late in the day, or morning. We ran our usual local course. When we got to the bagel store, there were no bagels to be found. So we continued on......as we crossed the Blvd, we ran into Nesconset Park, and I got to spend some time at the Dogpark. While here I came across a few dogs, one dog who had the same coloring us me, named Rocky and I ran around the dogpark and had some fun before Pam and I continued on. So we continued to run shortly after I had my romp at the dogpark.

I did want to mention today some up and coming races and/ or runs that Pam and I will be participating in. And if by some chance I do not participate I will at least be there to help my two legged companion train for the event. There are not a lot of events BUT we chose these so that we can train for each of these individually!

Here we go, of course on May 24th we have our very own marathon that we have been training for all this time. Then we start training for the NYC AMC Doggy Dash (run at the same time as the NYC Tri on the same course (the last 5 miles at least) as the triathlon on July 19th.

After that we will be training for the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon which supports the veterans, a cause I can get behind! On Sept 13th, Pam will be running the event BUT of course due to insurance issues DOGS will not be allowed on the marathon course. I gotta work on this!

The next race is the Running of the Bull 5k in Smithtown. Here I will be running the race with Pam once again......yes, I ran this with Pam last year it was miles 13 to 16 of a 19 mile run.

And then to round out the year, will be training for the Myles Standish Marathon in Plymouth, MA. And on Nov 15, 2015, Pam will take to the course in MA!.......

On Thanksgiving, I hope to run the Nissequoque River State Park Turkey Trot as well, once again with Pam. (Pam said we will see about this one because I saw another dog last year and I slipped my harness to get to the dog, and apparently the dog wasn't as friendly as me!, nothing happened BUT Pam got mad at me!)

So there you have it folks the upcoming years races/ runs......we will be training for and/ or racing......

Oh, of course, I do want to mention our fundraiser....you can help us help out (did I just go all Jerry Maguire on you all there?!?!?).....anyway click on these links and you can buy our book- in fact, we will start instead of just the month of May- we will extend it from April 15 to May 24th and with every book sold we will donate a portion of the proceeds to Kent Animal Shelter......

8 miles....and Doggie Cam......

April 22, 2015-

Week 12 is halfway through.....We ran an 8 mile run this morning. Running through St James today, of course I had to call out to my fellow canine friends and try to go over to each and everyone of them to say hi and sniff their butts, but Pam just wanted to keep going. We appreciated every step of the way, we appreciated the quietness of our time out on the roads.

After we got home I ran around the yard and had some fun with Sandy, Candycane, and Benji.....and a little digging in the yard as well.......

Blog of the Day

April 21, 2015-

Yesterday was the Boston marathon and the friends I mentioned in yesterdays blog did Great! They were my inspiration for todays run. One person in particular inspired me to go out and run even in the rain! Yikes!

Stephanie Hoffman, and I will quote her or rather copy and paste her facebook post here:

What an emotional day! Marathon 6 in the books. I don't know where to begin. It was a hard trip to finally get to the start line. From qualifying in 2010 and missing registration cutoff by 30secs to giving up year to qualify in 2013 and finally getting accepted. I thought starting to train for Boston I would be more focused and determined but rather I got in a rut and depressed for the last 6months. Running felt like a job, My training was horrible and my attitude was just to... get it over with. I will never forget today. I still have to hold back my tears from the start to the entire course. It was AMAZING!! The people from Boston are awesome!! From the girls at Wellsey College giving out kisses, the locals from every town along the course, from guys at Boston College chanting let's go Fast Feet!! I loved every minute of Boston!! Now I'm ready for the next marathon in the fall and I will definitely be back to Boston with a different attitude. I will not take for granted and respect the 26.2. It's a good day when u can finish a marathon.

Her words stuck with me as I ran a 10 mile run this morning with Pam, it started to rain (a pretty good downpour at about 6.5 miles)......and I thought of how Stephanie said she went through the terrible training and all and carried on! So I thank you Stephanie for the motivation today, you never know how your words truly affect anyone right?!?!?!

As far as our training run went today, we started out on a fairly warm morning, a little overcast.....even though the forecast called for rain we headed out. Pam wore her rain jacket just in case! After we went looking for bagels at the bagel store, we headed over to Nesconset Park where we ran around the walkway there, we headed down towards the gazebo and just before we hit the hill to head down to the gazebo it started to pour- I would say it was about 6.5 miles or so! Free shower for both of us! We continued on anyway, afterall we headed out to do 10 miles and not give up before we got there!  I do have to mention that during the whole entire run the weather went from overcast to sun shinning to raining and then.....

We finished our run, and of course the sun came out once again.....I came home and just wanted to go on the bed and lie down, with Sandy by my side, and Candycane close by, and Skyler's pillow under my head!

On the note of motivation.....today, the final finisher crossed the finish line! 19 or 20 hours after starting......he had muscular dystrophy and every step he took must have been everything for him and for this point on EVERY STEP I take I will NEVER TAKE FOR GRANTED AND I (as well as Pam) vow to cherish every step and revel in all the power and beauty of just taking the next step!
As I think of several people close to me who do not have the ability to walk or even to stand, I will run with them in mind just like Skyler, Sandy, Candycane, and Pam have done previously I will follow suit and run for those who cannot!  Check this link out on the bit of motivation or inspiration from the marathon finishers: http://abcn.ws/1ObagBb

A New week begins- Week 12 of training

April 20, 2015-

So today is actually Marathon Monday for the Boston Marathon......we have several friends running the event....Wil Widman Jr, Stephanie Hoffman, and Tiffany Schwartz are just three that are coming to mind right now. Wil and Stephanie are fellow Long Islanders that run with their dogs too! And Tiffany who lives in NJ definitely runs with the BIG dogs!

I also want to mention to these runners that today is your turn but May 24th Pam and myself will be Getting Our Leash On!

Today here on Long Island we ran a wet 4 miles, yes- it is raining here on Long Island. And since Boston is just across Long Island Sound, just north of Long Island it's raining there as well. I am hoping they are going to think of the rain today as a wetter snow, that I know all the people who trained on the east coast this year for Boston trained in. A very good thing is that there is no reason for anyone to be dehydrated today! I for one would just find a puddle and drink on up once I got thirsty! The human runners can just look up and open their mouth, LOL!.....

Pam said she had one of her best marathons in the rain! The rain is cooling and hydrating. Just hope it doesn't POUR all at once.....a lite rain is best, but I know no matter what these runners can have a great race!

Halfway through our run today, we got to stop and carb on up with a bagel. Pam brought two home in her pocket for me as well, so thanks to my favorite bagel shop I had three FREE bagels!

Just another rest day!

April 19, 2015-

After yesterdays long run, we deserve a nice rest day today!....I think I'll end up taking a nice easy walk with Benji and Pam today......you can check out his blog here: http://benjistrainingblog.blogspot.com/

Yep, that's him to the right! Whenever he hears us coming he runs down to the other end of the house and waits for us by the backdoor, then he awaits for his leash to be put on and of course we're off.....he mainly walks with us, but there are times when he runs with shorter runs with us. He has run 5 miles with us, maybe we'll try an 8 mile run with him this week.....we'll see if he's up for it!

We've been working him up to the distance slowly of course, starting with a half mile and increasing the distance slowly and easily. He does get a lot of extra table scraps or treats that is making him chunky- heck plain fat! But he is determined to work it off! In fact, the last time he was with us at the bagel place (I must mention he does love his bagels too) he refused a bagel and just wanted to keep walking.......maybe it was the vet office being around the bend, maybe it was wanting to lose those extra pounds, maybe it was something else but anyway, I am proud of him. He used to run with Skyler and walk with the group- Skyler, Sandy, Candycane, and I , and Monty and Mully when they would stay here.....Here's to hoping Monty comes to stay with us soon again!

Today I wanted to mention more about the breed- the American Foxhound (even though I am a MUTT, I definitely have the characteristics of the breed and am primarily this breed).
I wanted to mention about the health of them, as we know different breeds may be more prone to certain health concerns than others and all. For example the German Shepherd in Skyler was more prone to degenerative myopathy. However, the breed I am most connected to is not a breed that a
breed that generally carries any genetic disorders. Of course it must be mentioned that they can easily be overfed and become overweight. This can led to a minor health risk called thrombocytopathy which is a platelet disease. Basically this is poorly functioning blood platelets and it can result in excessive bleeding from minor bumps or cuts. A blood test can determine if the dog is prone to this and therefore can be handled early on. Also dysplasia was largely unknown to the breed but it does come on occasionally, along with some eye issues.

Basically what I am trying to get across to people here is to find out about your dog and have them tested (usually a blood test will show a lot) for any abnormalities in their makeup so that you can keep up with things from the start and continue on from there.

Oh, I do want to mention our fundraiser....you can help us help out (did I just go all Jerry Maguire on you all there?!?!?).....anyway click on these links and you can buy our book- in fact, we will start instead of just the month of May- we will extend it from April 15 to May 24th and with every book sold we will donate a portion of the proceeds to Kent Animal Shelter......

Today's training blog.......

April 18, 2015-

Today Pam and I head out early for a 20 mile run and that's what we did. We started out at home and ran to St James. Where we took a bathroom break and picked up our race bib for the St James 5 miler! (the president of the Greater Long Island Running Club calls it the St James Half Marathon, and even had a shirt made up saying so!) After our pickup and bathroom stop, we continued on and ran the course backwards to end up at the start!......I decided to do a Skyler and start lunging at bikes that came at me, which literally took Pam by surprise! I had never done this before. So whenever we came across bike riders Pam started to roll up my leash and hold me tight and close- apparently this is what she did with Skyler! (that's my girlfriend!)

When we got to the start we ran a little bit more to bring the total distance before the race to 10 miles, we still ended up waiting a good 20- 25 minutes before the start of the race though, I got to say hi to a few fellow dog who would be walking the race. Before we knew it the race was underway, we stayed in the back of the crowd for safety reasons. Of course I saw this little Pomerian dog that was running along and I just wanted to go over and say Hi, and of course with his short little legs for every step of mine he had to take what 10?!?!??! so I had to keep turning around at the start of the race to try to say Hi....and I kept pulling Pam back......

At about 2.25 miles we caught up with a fellow GLIRC runner, Jose Mendez, this was about 12.5 miles for us......check this video out!

Pam kept questioning during the whole race why I wanted to run along side others and not her.....honestly I want to get her to run alongside others while I try to get her a few steps if not further along! Hey, winning a race here or there can be fun! I'll be working on her in the months to come, I mean we have the Doggy Dash coming up in July!

Soon it came time to go up Corwood Rd, this is a 1/2 mile uphill twisty road that we went up......Check this video out......

When we came to the finish line of the race, we finished the 5 mile race but still kept going for yet another 5 miles......Oh I have to mention I got the cheers coming across the finish line, they all cheered for me- Pam may have gotten one or two cheers BUT they were all impressed by ME not Pam, ha! Watch this video of me crossing the finishing line!

When we finished our training run, we came home and rested after a long yet enjoyable 20 miles!

Until tomorrow,
Have a tail wagging day,
and Get Your Leash On!,
